| Fan | someone who has an intense, occasionally overwhelming liking of a sporting club, person, group of persons, company, product, work of art, idea, or trend.(In this case, ANIME.) |
| Otaku(オタク) | The used terms for an anime-fan, usually a very serious one. Directly translates into 'geek' or 'nerd'. |
| Doujinshi(ドジシ) or (同人誌) | self-published Japanese and/or English works, usually manga or novels. They are often the work of amateurs, though some professional artists participate as a way to publish material outside the regular industry. *Also known as the manga version of a fanfiction. |
| Fanfiction or Fanfic | broadly-defined term for fiction about characters or settings written by fans of the original work, rather than by the original creators. *Note: Most are usually about things characters wish they could hear the characters say..=) |
| Cosplay(コスプレ) | a Japanese subculture centered on dressing as characters from manga, anime, tokisatsu, and video games, and, less commonly, Japanese live action television shows, fantasy movies, Japanese Pop Music bands, and novels. |
| Bishounen or Bishie (美少年) | a Japanese term literally meaning "beautiful boy, or beautiful youth." *Usually, when drawing yaoi, artists, would make the male characters in this kind of style. |
| Bishōjo (美少女, Bishōjo ; びしょうじょ; bishoujo) | literally, "beautiful young girl." In anime/manga, this style is used in many genres, but usually in Shoujo Anime. The drawing style for this is called Moe Drawing. |
| Canon | in the context of a fictional universe, comprises those animes, etc., that are considered to be genuine or officially sanctioned, and those events, characters, settings, etc., that are considered to have existence within the fictional universe. *So if a person says to you, "SasuIno IS CANON!!!", don't agree(unless you really think so..) |
| Yaoi(やおい) | a publishing genre which focuses on male/male homosexual relationships and is marketed at females. *In anime/manga usually. *Note: This genre is usually used mainly in fandom. |
| Yuri(百合) | female version of yaoi. *Note: This genre is usually used mainly in fandom. |
| Shounen-Ai(少年愛) | term that is applied to anime or manga that deals with love between young men. *Literally translates into 'boy-love' or boys-together'. *Is less explicit then yaoi. |
| Shoujo-Ai(少女愛) | a rarely used term in Japan; feminine version of shounen-ai, although known better as yuri. |
| Shoujo(少女) | Japanese for "young lady" or "little girl". These are generally targeted at girls. Examples: Fruits Basket. |
| Shounen(少年) | Japanese for "young boy". Examples: Dragon Ball Z or Digimon . |
| Seinen (青年) | Japanese for "young man" and normally includes teenage or young male adults. Examples: Cowboy Bebop or Samurai Champloo. |
| Josei(女性) | Japanese for "young woman" intended for young women. Examples: Gokusen. |
| Kodomo(子供向) | Anime intended for small children. Exapmles: Hello Kitty or Hamtaro. |
| Action/Adventure | primarily focuses on battles, war and physical competition. Martial arts, weapon fighting, or other oriented material are usually featured. Examples: Naruto or One Piece. |
| Drama | primarily has a high degree of character development and emotional themes. Many center around relationship complications. Examples: InuYasha or Fushigi Yugi. |
| Game Based | primarily revolves around some sort of card or board games. Examples: Yu-Gi-Oh! |
| Horror | use darker and/or supernatural themes. Examples: Ghost Hound. |
| Science Fiction | consists of futuristic elements, particularly featuring future science and technology. They can be drawn from current scientific studies and inventions or created to meet the needs of the world. Examples: Ghost in the Shell. |
| Sentai | "fighting team". Revolves around a super-hero team. |
| Mecha | features robots. |
| Maho-Shoujo | subgenre for 'Shoujo' featuring magical girls. Examples: Sailor Moon or Cardcaptor Sakura. |
| Maho-Shounen | Male version of Maho-Shoujo. Examples: FullMetal Alchemist(yes, it is!) |
| Harem | genre where one male character is surrounded by multiple female characters. Marketed as Shounen and Seinen. Examples: Love Hina |
| Reverse-Harem | genre where one females character is surrounded by multiple male characters. Examples: Ouran High School Host Club |
| Ecchi | Japanese for "indecent sexuality". Sexual humor and fan service are prevalent. Examples: He Is My Master. |
| Hentai | Japanese for "abnormal" or "perverted". This term is synonymous to pornography or erotica, as hentai content specifically consists of such. |
